Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says Mercedes cannot afford to be arrogant about its perceived advantage from the winter at the Australian Grand Prix.
Over the final Barcelona test it started to become clear Mercedes still has a considerable gap over the rest of the field. The quickest non-Mercedes time in Barcelona was from the Williams Valtteri Bottas’ 1:23.063 on Sunday, set on super-softs – three tenths off Nico Rosberg’s quickest time on softs.
Wolff thinks the team needs to go into the opener on March 15 ready for any eventuality.
“You know testing always difficult to read,” Wolff said. “It was looking good and now it’s about proving we can do the same on a race weekend with the normal scepticism we need to have – a glass half empty mentality. I think we can be optimistic.”
Mercedes won a record 16 of 19 races in 2014 and Wolff believes the team needs to keep thinking about the future if it wants to retain its dominant position.
