Despite a difficult start to the season for the McLaren team and its exclusive engine partner Honda, Fernando Alonso is convinced that he made the right choice in leaving Ferrari.
The Spanish double World Champion spent five seasons at Ferrari, without winning his much sought after third crown. Alonso therefore decided to take a risk by returning to McLaren and inaugurating Honda’s return to F1, knowing that the approach would be different.
“When I saw Mercedes winning by half a minute, I was so clear about my decision,” he told Sky Sports.
“To beat Mercedes at the moment, you need to do something different. You need to risk somehow because if you copy, you will be always behind. So I’m in the right place.”

However, McLaren’s cars qualified at the back of the grid during the opening round of the 2015 championship, in Australia two weeks ago. Saturday in Malaysia, Alonso qualified 18th, just behind teammate Jenson Button.
