Our spies in Germany have sent us photos of a completely undisguised 2016 Smart Fortwo Cabrio undergoing testing. Of course, it looks pretty much the same as the regular 3-door, but we have reason to believe the official debut is imminent.
The highlight of the Fortwo Cabrio is an electrically operated folding canvas roof. Unlike the one on its sister car, the Renault Twingo 3, the roof goes all the way down to the boot, giving you a more open-space feeling.
Starting at about €11,000 in Germany, this will be one of the cheapest convertibles in the world, not to mention one of the cutest. When we tested the 2015 Fortwo, all eyes were on us, as the Edition 1 package’s orange paint and black wheels grabbed attention by the suspenders.
In total, three engine versions will be available in Europe, though only the most powerful will make it to the US later this year. The base models will get a 60 horsepower version of a 1-liter 3-cylinder unit, followed by a 71 hp one. While smaller, the 0.9-liter will offer more power (90 hp) and about 50% more torque.
